Why Move a Round-the-Clock Industrial Operation Out of an Industrial Corridor and Put It Next to People's Homes?

Bridgeport, Armour Square, Chinatown, and surrounding South Side residents are fighting Amtrak’s plan to relocate a major 24/7 maintenance and fueling operation from its current largely nonresidential industrial site near Roosevelt Road and Canal Street to the Canal Street rail yard, directly alongside homes in our densely populated communities.

Amtrak already has a maintenance facility. Its current South Loop facility sits on approximately 47 acres in a largely industrial corridor where very few people live nearby.

The proposed Canal Street site is different. Thousands of people live within walking distance of the site, with homes, schools, parks, and businesses nearby.

We are not opposed to Amtrak. We are not opposed to rail investment, modernization, or jobs. We are opposed to putting a massive 24/7 industrial maintenance and fueling operation next to people's homes.

Why We Created This Site

When residents learned about the proposed Canal Street facility in August 2026, many of us were caught completely by surprise.

We quickly discovered that the project had been developing long before the surrounding communities were informed.

We created this site to bring the information together in one place: government documents, environmental reviews, project plans, public records, news coverage, timelines, and other information related to the proposal.

Our goal is to understand what is happening, document how we got here, share what we learn with our neighbors, and make sure our community has the information it needs to defend itself.

We are continuing to request records, review documents, ask questions, and add new information as it becomes available.

How Did We Get Here?

Records and reporting show that planning, financing, property transactions, and government discussions surrounding the project were taking place well before most residents learned what was being proposed for our neighborhood.

Meanwhile, relocating Amtrak would free approximately 47 acres of valuable South Loop riverfront property that is under contract for a massive private redevelopment backed by billionaire investor Justin Ishbia.

Why are entire communities being asked to reorganize themselves around the real-estate ambitions of one billionaire?

That is a question Chicago should be asking.

What We Are Asking

Our position is simple:

Stop the Canal Street project and find an appropriate nonresidential location for the maintenance facility.

There are still important questions about how Canal Street was selected, what alternatives were considered, how environmental impacts were evaluated, what property would be required for the project, and why surrounding communities were brought into the process so late.

But those questions do not change the fundamental problem.

A 24/7 industrial maintenance and fueling facility does not belong beside thousands of people's homes.

Amtrak should build its modern maintenance facility.
